Our Story

Built by Practitioners, for the People They Work With

Global Sentynel started because we kept seeing the same thing: organisations hiring the big consulting firms and getting junior staff, a generic framework, and advice written for a business that did not exist. We were part of that machine for a while. We knew it could be done better.

We built a firm around the opposite model. Senior practitioners on every engagement. Honest assessments, even when the honest answer is to do nothing. A network of trusted specialists we have worked alongside for years, rather than a database of contractors we have never met.

The name reflects how we think about security. Threats cross borders. Attackers are not local. The tools, techniques, and knowledge needed to defend well have to be global too. We use that network every day for our clients, whether they are a 100-person business or a large enterprise.

We are based in Melbourne. The people we call on are spread across several countries.

The "global" in our name is deliberate. It does not mean we are a multinational with an office on every continent. It means the people we draw on, and the threats we defend against, do not stop at the border.

We have long-standing relationships with experienced security practitioners across several countries. When a client needs a skill we do not carry in-house, we know who to call. These are people we have worked alongside, not names in a contractor database.

For a smaller organisation that means specialist skills a boutique firm would not normally have on hand. For a larger one it means we can staff a big engagement with senior people.

The People Behind the Work

Every engagement is led by a senior practitioner. We do not use client work as a training ground for juniors. The people you deal with have done this before, in production, with something at stake.

Gerardo Lopez

Founder

Gerardo has spent over 22 years in information security and risk management. He started in London, moved to Los Angeles, and settled in Melbourne 15 years ago. Along the way he has consulted to companies of every size across entertainment, telecommunications, financial services and mining, and much of his recent work has been GRC inside APRA-regulated financial services.


He works as a senior security architect and has founded several businesses of his own. He holds a current Baseline security clearance.

Stuart Robins

Principal Consultant

Stuart has spent 28 years in enterprise IT, the last 15 of them in security architecture. He started as a programmer, then a performance tester, moved into solution architecture, and settled on cloud security in 2014. He is a SABSA Chartered Security Architect and holds a current NV1 clearance.


He has worked on several $500M-plus transformation programs, most recently at a big four Australian bank, advising on how to build platforms that are secure, scalable and compliant. Salesforce told the bank his design was “One of the top 3 most secure instances they had ever seen, worldwide”.


Outside of work he enjoys metal fabrication, machining and welding, and watching the latest TV show on the couch.

Our Approach to Every Engagement

We keep things simple. Every engagement starts with listening, not presenting. We want to understand your situation before we offer any opinion on what you should do about it.

From there we move at your pace, keep you informed, and make sure whatever we hand over is something your team can run without us.

We spend time understanding your business, your constraints, and what has already been tried before we say anything about what you should do next.

We Tell You What We Think

Not what you want to hear. If there is a problem, we name it plainly. If a proposed solution will not work, we say so and explain why.

Projects get completed. We document what we have done, train the people who need to know, and make sure the work holds up after we are gone.
